Why Does A Can Still Smell After Trash Day?

What Is Actually Going On In The Cart?
You do not need to diagnose it. But describing what you see helps us tell you what to expect, and some of these change the answer.
- A wet layer or standing liquid in the bottom is the most common cause of a smell that survives collection day.
- Small pale larvae in the cart or under the lid rim come from flies laying eggs on exposed food waste, most often in warm weather. Cleaning the container removes what they are feeding on.
- A sour smell with no visible mess usually means residue dried onto the walls rather than pooled at the bottom.
- A lid that has been left open, or a cracked lid that no longer closes, changes how quickly all of the above happens.
- Dark staining on the outside of the cart is separate from what is inside it, and it is worth mentioning if the appearance is part of why you are asking.
What Helps Before We Arrive?
- Have the cart out and empty if you can. A cart that still has bags in it limits what any cleaning can reach.
- Leave it where we can get to it, or tell us where it lives if it is behind a gate or in a garage.
- Mention loose wheels, a broken lid, or a crack in the body, so damage is not mistaken for a cleaning result.
- Tell us if the cart belongs to the city or a hauler rather than to you, in case that affects what you want done to it.
- Say if a pet, a locked gate, or a parked vehicle usually sits in the way.
When Is Cleaning Not The Answer?
A cart with a cracked body, a broken hinge, or a lid that will not seal keeps letting moisture, heat, and pests back in. Cleaning it helps for a while, but the container is the problem. If the cart came from the city or your hauler, replacement is usually their process rather than ours.
Odor that is coming from somewhere other than the container is the same situation. If the pad, the garage floor, or the ground under the cart has absorbed spills, cleaning the cart alone will not settle it. Say so and we will talk about the surface too.

Right After Pickup, Or Closer To The Next One?
Either can work. The cart is easiest to clean when it is empty, so the window right after your collection day is usually the simplest. What matters more is what you are actually dealing with.
Use what you can see and smell, not a rule:
- Clean right after pickup if the cart smells even when it is empty, or if residue and stuck-on debris are still sitting in the bottom.
- Clean right after pickup if pet waste, diapers, or food waste go in the cart regularly, or if the weather has been warm and the smell is getting worse day to day.
- Clean right after pickup if the cart is shared between households or units, since more people means more unknowns in the bottom of it.
- Wait for the next empty window if the cart is still partly full, since a cleaning is only as good as how empty the container is.
- Timing matters less if the cart mostly holds bagged, dry household trash and the smell is mild. Then it is about how often you want it done, not which day.
